An Open Letter to the Fittest on Earth

An Open Letter to the Fittest on Earth

As the most recent local CrossFit games come to an end in a few days and the athletes considered by CrossFit experts to be the “Fittest on Earth” begin to emerge as winners, we can’t help but get ourselves involved in the conversation about fitness and CrossFit.

We had the pleasure of being on site at Chicago’s Movement Republic during the last four weeks and saw for ourselves the intensity of the competition. What we love the most is the commitment of the athletes. They have the courage to push themselves beyond what might seem possible and they rely on each other to achieve their goals.

We decided that we wanted to be a part of this CrossFit community, in our own way, by supporting athletes through Delos Therapy.

So what would make us great “teammates” for the CrossFit Community and why is Delos Therapy a critical component of becoming the “Fittest on Earth”? Here are our thoughts:

1. We are world class athletes

We have the credentials – our team of therapists includes a former Olympian and a former Pan American champion. We know what it means to be a world-class athlete. We know what it’s like to push the body to the limit, to consistently work hard, to experience frustrating physical pain and injuries, and to thrive in the end as a champion.

2. We have a unique perspective

We believe healthy muscles are critical for athletic performance and, in the context of CrossFit, we define muscle health as having maximum activation and maximum recruitment. To achieve this, muscles fibers must be soft and pliable in a relaxed state. Muscles should only be hard when they are flexed. What we notice from working on athletes is that performance and strength diminish and pain eventually emerges when muscles are chronically tight, or feel hard, in a relaxed state.  The challenge for athletes, prior to coming to Delos, is that the only solution they are offered for keeping muscles lose and pliable is conventional stretching (which we don’t believe does anything for tightness), foam rolling (which is too superficial and non-systematic) or perhaps trying to strengthen an area that hurts (something we don’t consider possible when muscle fibers are chronically contracted and can’t activate). We are here to challenge the limited standard views that exist and offer a real solution for muscle health and performance.

3. No one else does what we do

We pride ourselves as being the only company in Chicago where our technique is available. Delos Therapy is very subtle and yet the most effective solution for muscle tightness. There is a science behind everything we do – the muscles we focus on, the order of the muscles we address in each treatment, the angles of the pressure, the intensity, the tempo and the frequency. From a distance, it seems so simple, and yet, we know that all of these complicated aspects of our technique literally make the difference between getting someone well and not.

4. We want you to do CrossFit for life

Our team of professionals has a ton of experience working on athletes and we know for certain that, whether people exercise for fun, for health or to be champions, they don’t want to stop. Our goal is to make sure that they keep doing what they’re doing without pain or limitations. We have no interest in “managing” pain or asking people to “modify” the way they perform their activities. Our only goal for our clients is to eliminate pain, to optimize the performance of each muscle fiber and to keep it that way for life.

Delos Therapy has some amazing clients with extraordinary stories and we want to take the time to share their success with our therapy. Meet Christopher, a young and active individual suffering from severe neck and shoulder pain. Read his interview to find out his amazing transformation since starting Delos.

How did you hear about Delos?

CM: A friend of mine who could see my frustration with my constant neck/shoulder pain found Delos online and after reading all of the positive feedback, she really pushed me to give it a try.

What issues brought you to Delos?

CM: For years I have been struggling with sharp neck-pain and tingling from my neck down through my left arm and into my back.  Most likely from over-lifting and years of built up fibrotic tissue impinging on the nerves.

What types of treatments did you try before coming to Delos?

CM: Before Delos Therapy, I had tried three different forms of physical therapy, steroids, cervical injections, acupuncture, chiropractic, and even paleo dieting. Nothing was able to give me the relief I was looking for.

What improvements have you made since starting Delos Therapy?

CM: I initially came to Delos after a severe flair up where my left hand could not reach my right shoulder.  Since starting Delos, I have gained back all of that mobility and the pain has subsided considerably.  After my first session, Rob could tell exactly where my fibrotic tissue was and worked through those trouble spots to provide the relief I needed.

What would you say to someone who hasn’t tried Delos Therapy?

CM: As someone who has tried almost everything else, there is no reason NOT to try Delos.  It tackles the problem by approaching the muscle tissue in a unique way and helps relieve the pressure on the nerves causing pain. Its true pain relief.

Tell us something unique about you.

CM: I love playing basketball and lifting, so not being able to do those things had been tough.  I also love music, enjoy singing and playing piano.  Delos has helped me get back to enjoying some of those hobbies.

Delos Therapy has some amazing clients with extraordinary stories and we want to take the time to share their success with our therapy. Meet Ben, a young and active individual suffering from severe back pain. Read his interview to find out his amazing transformation since starting Delos.

How did you hear about Delos?

BJ: I heard about Delos through Claire, an instructor at Yoga Six and a current client of Delos.

What issues brought you to Delos?

BJ: Severe back pain brought me to Delos. It was waking me up every night, interfering with work every day. My quality of life was very low and nothing was helping – including extra strength pain medications.

What types of treatments did you try before coming to Delos?

BJ: Before Delos Therapy, I tried epidural injections, chiropractic, facet injections, physical therapy and medication. Saw dozens of doctors with no cure. I really didn’t know what to do.

What improvements have you made since starting Delos Therapy?

BJ: I was able to sleep through the night for the first time in 16 months after my 3rd session. I can function throughout the day without pain. I have started to get back into a routine that wasn’t feasible for quite a while. I feel like I’ve been revived back from the dead!

What would you say to someone who hasn’t tried Delos Therapy?

BJ: The team genuinely cares about getting you better. I was completely lost and Delos has quickly become my preferred method of getting better. Through their technique and no foreign substances entering my body, I don’t have any pain after over a year of significant pain 24/7.

Delos Therapy has some amazing clients with extraordinary stories and we want to take the time to share their success with our therapy. Meet Mary, an active mother and grandmother suffering from chronic hip pain. Read her interview to find out her amazing transformation since starting Delos.

How did you hear about Delos?

MM: My daughter, Katie, actually turned me on to Delos. Katie heard about Delos from a friend and they both have had positive results which convinced me to try it for myself.

What issues brought you to Delos?

MM: When I began Delos Therapy, I had a very sore and painful left hip.

What types of treatments did you try before coming to Delos?

MM: Before Delos Therapy I went to an orthopedic surgeon. He told me I didn’t have a surgical issue, but bursitis. His recommendation was a cortisone shot and physical therapy, both of which I tried with little success. I still had pain, so I decided to try Delos.

What improvements have you made since starting Delos Therapy?

MM: I started out at Delos with a fairly intensive schedule, but I have to say my results are nothing short of a miracle. I know that sounds a bit dramatic, but I am happy to say my hip is great. No more pain. I can lay on my left side when sleeping without pain. I can walk, bike and continue the activities that I enjoy without pain. As an extra bonus, I have had chronic neck pain for years. Doctors say it is arthritis. I have tried massage therapy, acupuncture, traction, numerous prescription drugs, physical therapy…the list goes on and on. These modalities provided short, temporary relief but it never lasted. Delos Therapy gets you out of pain and it lasts.

What would you say to someone who hasn’t tried Delos Therapy?

MM: I would tell them to give it a shot. What have they got to lose? If it is a muscular issue, Delos can help. It has been a win win from my perspective. Delos provides you with a complimentary evaluation. Even from that twenty minute session I could tell the difference in my issues. The Delos therapists are a very caring group. They come from many backgrounds and I found that some of them have known chronic pain themselves. They really want to help and get you pain free.

Tell us something unique about you.

MM: I can’t say I am that unique – I am an active 60+ year old who wants to remain that way. I have a husband, four children, three grandchildren and a lot of living left to do.

What We Know About Muscle Health From Doing Therapy On Children

What We Know About Muscle Health From Doing Therapy On Children

During the last few years the Delos team has been invited to participate in a “Family Health and Fitness Day” at a local elementary school. While we enjoy teaching kids about muscle health and the Delos technique, a surprising outcome of doing Delos Therapy on very young people is the learning that takes place for our newest therapists.

At Delos, we know from decades of clinical experience that hyper-contracted muscle fibers are the root cause of most cases of chronic pain. In our daily lives, when we work or when we train in the gym, the repetitive motions or sustained contractions we experience cause muscle fibers to relax and contract. Over time – sometimes years and decades – contractions become shorter and shorter, ultimately resulting in hyper-contracted fibers that are no longer capable of flexing and relaxing.  When this happens, symptoms of stiffness and pain begin to emerge due to limited mobility or pressure and forces pulling on joints and clamping down on vessels and nerves.

One physical characteristic we encounter consistently when working on clients is that the muscles surrounding areas that are experiencing pain or stiffness feel especially hard to the touch.  Many people who see us for the first time don’t find this hardness problematic until we address the topic of true muscle health. We’ve come to the conclusion that most people believe that muscles should feel hard. In fact, most people go to the gym to get the “hard” body look. There are even gym classes called “Buns of Steel” that suggest gluts should be hard like metal.

We are here to assert something different – a fundamental characteristic of healthy muscle tissue is its softness when it is in a relaxed state.  We’ll say that again – healthy muscles should feel soft to the touch.  The only time “buns” should feel like steel is when they are flexed. In fact, we have had the opportunity to palpate the muscles of extremely muscular bodybuilders and what we have found is that their muscles are extremely soft to the touch. The hardness is apparent only when they flex. The reason the muscles look hard is because the area around the muscle is very lean, containing little body fat and water, and the skin is taut around the muscle, giving it a hard appearance. In reality, their muscles are soft when in a relaxed state.

So what have we learned or validated from doing therapy on children? First, when we palpate children’s muscles, they are almost always soft to the touch. Children don’t tend to have a lot of pain because their bodies haven’t been put through years of repetitive motions and sustained contractions to cause hyper-contraction and tightness.  At their young age, their muscles still exhibit optimal health. Second, since their muscles are healthy and soft, children don’t feel pain during Delos Therapy.  Some of our clients will say that getting therapy can be painful and they describe it as a “hurts so good” sensation. In reality, applying pressure on healthy muscles should not be painful.  Only when fibers are tightly bound, preventing circulation, compressing nerves and pulling on joints, do we notice that there is sensitivity to pressure.

Our therapy is designed to undo muscle tightness using a complex, systematic approach. We understand that loose, soft muscle fibers lead to superior performance in the gym and in life. Essentially, our goal is to restructure unhealthy muscle tissue and restore it to the state it was in when it was most healthy – in our youth.
