Powerlifting Shoulder Injury: Trace
February 24, 2020   |   By Delos Therapy Team

Delos Therapy has some amazing clients with extraordinary stories and we want to take the time to share their success with our therapy. Meet Trace Shoup, a full-time nurse and powerlifter, working past a shoulder injury and into athletic performance and longevity. Read his interview to find out his amazing transformation since starting Delos.

How did you hear about Delos Therapy?

TS: I heard about Delos Therapy from another client who was seeing a therapist in Oak Brook. She’d rave about the benefits and all the physical improvements she was seeing.  Having played college football and now being an avid powerlifter, I’m always looking for new things, but I also have a healthy skepticism. There is a lot of junk on the internet.

What is it about power-lifting that you love?

TS: A lot of the things that I enjoyed from playing college football transfer into powerlifting. It’s a physical outlet, a hobby, great for stress relief and a goal-oriented way to work on improving myself.

Do you work with a coach or a group?

TS: Our gym 2XL Powerlifting focuses on group-based training where we all take cues from one another. I usually train 4 days per week and training periods usually last between 10 to12 weeks. The more experienced athletes are really supportive and it helps everyone to have different sets of eyes on form. I think people really see the best benefits from a group setting. Everyone comes in from different backgrounds and jobs, and yet we have created this great community.

What issues brought you to Delos Therapy?

TS: I had shoulder surgery from a torn labrum in my shoulder at 18 years old. Marc (one of the therapists) came to the gym during a 2XL event and worked for 10 minutes on me just to give me a taste of the treatment. Afterwards, I was moving my shoulder around and thought, “You know you might be onto something.” So I came back for the 20 minute evaluation to have him work on my back and it was kind of a shock the first time because my muscles weren’t used to the therapy, but later it actually started to feel really good.

What improvements have you made since starting Delos Therapy?

TS: As I was training, everything just started to move really well, so we continued working on other areas like the hamstrings, low back, and so on. I started to see the real benefit of the work. I was moving better and I could press overhead for the first time in years, which is an area I’ve always guarded due to the shoulder issues. Since loosening everything up, there’s more function than I realized. I really saw the benefit from both a recovery standpoint and also the longevity standpoint.

I’m a full time nurse, so I try to take care of myself the best I can. I’ve seen nurses in their 50’s and 60’s hobbling around and you can see the wear on them. Now that self care practices are becoming more prevalent, I’m really in therapy for general body maintenance while also working on focal points that support my lifting.

What would you say to someone who hasn’t tried Delos Therapy?

TS: You’ve got one body – take care of it.

Tell us something unique about you.

TS: My next powerlifting meet is March 21st. It’ll also have been about a year since my last meet and I’m really excited!
